Tutorial:Setting up a Counter-Strike server

Hello world, this is my 2nd post on Setting up a Counter-Strike server, yes your very own server. After you’ve port forwarded already from the last post, this is gonna be easier ;) .

First you’ll have to download the CS 1.6 Server Creator from the following link : http://tinyurl.com/yhc5rdt

Then create a new folder in your Hard-Disk and name it ‘HLDS’.

Now execute the ‘installer.exe’ from the CS 1.6 Server Creator and select the HLDS folder in your Hard-Disk, it will start unpacking and extracting the files there :) . It will take time depending upon the bandwidth of your internet connection. When it’s done installing, it should be around 315MB. It should look like this :-

The next step is to setup the server for accepting Non-Steam clients. In-order to do that download the swds.dll patch from the following link : http://tinyurl.com/2ezvugs . Patch this to your HLDS Folder.

Next step is to configure the server.cfg. Go to HLDS/cstrike and open server.cfg on notepad. Delete all content and copy the following text :

// server name
hostname “Server Name”

// rcon passsword
rcon_password “password”

// server cvars
mp_friendlyfire 0

sv_region 0

// execute ban files
exec banned_user.cfg
exec banned_ip.cfg

^This is how your server will work on the internet. (You will edit you server name and cvar from the server.cfg)

You’ll have to add this text in your server.cfg in order to make your server visible in the Master Server List :

setmaster add 69.28.151.162
setmaster add 72.165.61.189
setmaster add 207.173.177.11
setmaster add 65.73.232.251:27040
setmaster add 65.73.232.253:27040
setmaster add 207.173.177.12:27010

^This is how other players (Pub) will find your server on the Master Servers and connect.

Now go to HLDS/cstrike and open liblist.gam in notepad and add the following text :-

gamedll “addons\metamod\dlls\metamod.dll”

In-order to get the server working copy your HLDS folder on your desktop and execute ‘hlds.exe’

To see if the server is running properly, type in the server console ‘meta list’ – If the message relieved is AMX Mod X – Run, then the server is working fine.

You are done :D .

Google Chrome Event Re-Cap and Analysis

Google’s Chrome team had a lot to share with the public today at an event they held in San Francisco.  They shared how now there are 120 m consumers who use the Chrome browser to surf the internet.  They also announced that with Chrome 8 the browser is no, thanks to a new technology called “Crankshaft” is now the fasted web browser on the market.

Two of the biggest announcements was the official launch of the chrome web app store and a public beta of their Chrome OS which included showing off a reference Chrome notebook called CR-48.

Chrome Web Store
The Chrome Web Store was announced by Google at their 1/0 conference earlier in the year.   Officially it was made available to the public today and I fully anticipate it to be well received.  The Chrome Web App store at the very least will move HTML 5.0 forward leaps and bounds as developers create unique and new experiences with their web content using this new technology.  The main goal of the Chrome store is discoverability.  Google anticipates the future of the web and websites to feel more like a native software application then a website.  With a store focused on these web apps Google hopes to make the discovery process of new web content and applications simple, similar to current app stores today.   In the grand scheme of things though the Chrome web store is set up to pave the way for Google’s Chrome OS.

Chrome OS
Much has been said and written about regarding Chrome OS yet not much has been seen to validate it as a real product.   Today Google changed that by showing off a Chrome Notebook reference design named CR-48.  Products that ship with Chrome OS Google claims will be the most secure consumer devices on the market.  Google outlined at length the security innovations they developed that makes their Chrome operating system the most secure on the planet.  In essence this claim is made possible because of the way the OS is tied to the hardware making data encryption at the hardware level possible.  Chrome notebooks will in essence gets its security because of this and apps that run on Chrome OS will be more secure then apps that run on the browser.

Tying software security to the hardware is nothing new and is part of the reason Intel bought McAfee.   Apple should also get credit for their security strength as well and is only accomplished by making both the software and the hardware.

Where is it all going?
Google makes a very valid case for cloud app and cloud app computing.   The on stage demonstration by Citrix who provides secure enterprise software as a service, running in Chrome browser and Chrome OS was very telling about where cloud based applications can go.  It is still a little early for us to write off native applications however it is true that there is very little you can’t do in the web that you can do with a native application.

The fact that HTML 5.0 will be moved forward because of these efforts is perhaps one of the most exciting outcomes.  HTML 5.0 will do a great deal to bring the web in a new way and to new devices in a way that was not possible before.   It will be exciting to see how the future of the web evolves and Chrome browser and OS will hopefully spur the kind of web based innovations that can drive that evolution.

Tutorial : How To Mount iPod Nano 6G Resources

This was discovered by Steven Troughton-Smith and DarkMalloc, This is a tutorial which you can use to mount the iPod nano 6G resource partiton.

The pre requites you need are

– the 9 partition files using Extract2G using this guide here: http://wp.me/p1fLUC-5x

Steps

1. Open terminal and cd into the folder which is containing the extracted files .

2. You will have to run this command [dd if=rsrc.fw of=rsrc.img iseek=2 count=284672]

3. Then a file named rsrc.img will be created and will be in the same folder of the extracted files

4. Click on the finder to mount it

5. Enjoy !!

This partition contains SilverImagesDB.LE.bin, (‘Silver’=codeword?) the file which contains all the images for the Nano OS, if we can mod it and get it back onto the Nano, theming, custom clock faces, custom backgrounds and so on, should be possible.

RedSn0w Updated to Remove USBMuxd Requirement for Untether

Redsn0w 0.9.7 b4 has been released and on of the improvements on it is that USBMuxd requirement has been removed to unteher the jailbreak.

But a sad thing is that that this too is only a Mac version release so the windows people will still have to wait or if they are very impatient then they should go buy a Mac. 😛

The fourth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). Starting with this version, redsn0w no longer requires you to install and run a separate program for the usbmux (this was a non-trivial procedure for many). It’s okay to keep that program running if you normally use it for ssh anyway. We also think we’ve fixed a race condition in the GUI that was causing redsn0w to crash during the “Preparing JB Monte Files” step. Nothing at all has changed on the iPhone side (where the main issues are still just Bluetooth and Skype).

Download Link.

78% Of All Web Videos Encoded For iOS

But iPhone doesn’t play Flash based videos”, has been a statement I’ve heard for quite some time now when friends and family ask for advice choosing a new smartphone. What I advise them is always based on the individual and their needs. Sometimes I will steer them towards iOS, other times Android. The thing I always tell them is, don’t eliminate iOS simply because it lacks Flash support, as most web content is encoded to play on Apple Devices.

According to Encoding.com, a company that encodes approximately a million videos a month from all sorts of media conglomerates like MTV and PBS, nearly 78 percent of it’s customers encode their mobile video content to play on iOS devices. Only four percent specifically select Android encoding, while the last 18 percent being gobbled up by the 3GP format.

This is not to say that 78 percent of the video only works on iOS and not other platforms, what Encoding.com states is their customers specifically select iOS encoding, but don’t select Android. Videos will still play on the Android platform, but if a content provider specifically selects Android it will be optimized for that operating system. This is not a huge surprise as iOS is still default, but Encoding CEO Jeff Malkin predicts Android numbers will increase as it continues to gain market share.

The 1400 clients that Encoding.com is working for are pretty representative of the industry as a whole, ranging from individual websites, public relations and advertising firms to retailers and broadcast networks. Content providers like to see huge gains before they encode specifically for a device or platform, and as of right now, iOS is on top, but as noted Android is making quick gains.

An interesting side note, encoding on the web as whole, H.264 format is continually growing, while Windows Media has slipped to 1.2 percent of total encodes and is on the verge of extinction.

Based on these trends content providers are making a huge effort to optimize content for mobile devices, which should make the tech savvy readers of TechnoBuffalo extremely happy as more content will be optimized for your mobile lifestyle.

Samsung to introduce iPod Touch like Media player at CES 2011?

There has been talk about Samsung preparing to introduce an iPod Touch like Media player at CES 2011. This Media player would most likely feature a Super AMOLED 2 Touch screen display, run Google Android and have storage options of up to 32GB. It would go under Samsungs Galaxy range of devices so it seems that it would basically be a Samsung Galaxy S without phone capabilities. There has also been reports of Samsung buying up large quantities of the new Nvidia Tegra 2 chipset, a powerful processor that helps with HD media play back. Samsung has also been preparing a new Super AMOLED 2 display so this is the reason why I think the device would most likely feature it. This would be really cool to see and I think this device would sell well. What do you think? Let us know!
