Geohot Attacks Sony ! PSN Has Been Down for Days !

For those who who don’t live for Call of Duty: Black Ops, or other popular PS3 titles, you may not have noticed how much trouble Sony has been having lately. Their free online service, PSN (Playstation Network) has been down since late Wednesday night.

We’re not talking about a a minor inconvenience here, we’re talking about millions of people being blocked from Sony’s version of Xbox live for 4 days now. Netflix, Hulu, and several major online games are feeling the effects of Sony’s crippled network…

It certainly looks like the Sony v.s. GeoHot saga isn’t quite over. You might recall the hacking group, known as Anonymous, making threats against Sony and their network in wake of the GeoHot litigation.

Sony sure seems to think it’s them, or at least some sort of outside attack that’s crippling their servers:

“An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. in order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertatinment services to our customers and partners i our utmost priority.”

The group of electronic activists are well known for fighting for freedom and privacy via security breaches. Their major beef with Sony seems to be that the company requested social media sites like YouTube and Facebook to hand over IP addresses of people who viewed GeoHot’s social pages.

While Anonymous has admitted to previous attacks on Sony’s servers, they are claiming innocent on this one. They posted this message on their blog yesterday:

“While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves, AnonOps was not related to this incident and does not take responsibility for whatever has happened. A more likely explanation is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous’ ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact that the outage is actually an internal problem.”

In past Sony attacks, Anonymous has been careful not to bring down PSN servers that hosted multiplayer games to avoid effecting the gaming community.

Regardless of who’s behind the shutdown, the news still made me smile. Even though I’m an avid Call of Duty fan, it’s nice to think that a major corporation may not always be able to hide behind their stacks of money. Some might call these activists a bit too extreme, I say it’s kind of nice to have such a powerful group on the side of freedom. Who knows, we may need their help fighting for the right to jailbreak some day.

GeoHot Gives Left Over Donations to EFF

If you missed out on the Sony vs. GeoHot saga, let me quickly fill you in. GeoHot (real name George Hotz) was one of the first people to jailbreak the iPhone years ago. He’s been in and out of the jailbreak scene since then, but had recently turned his attention to Sony’s PS3.

After hacking the console, GeoHot released the code to the internet. Sony caught wind of this and took the infamous computer wiz to court. Hotz hopped online and asked for donations to help him in litigation, and received overwhelming support. He told supporters that he had received more than enough help to survive the first round of legal fees…

After what seemed to be a short court battle, a surprise out-of-court settlement brought the entire fight to an uneventful halt. This prompted a lot of questions from the supporting public. Why did he settle so quickly after all the aggressive comments he made like, “Help me own Sony in court.”What seemed to irk people the most were the donations he received. What was he going to quickly after all the aggressive comments he made like, “Help me own Sony in court.”

What seemed to irk people the most were the donations he received. What was he going to do with all of this left over money that was donated to him to support his fight against Sony? Would it be right of him to keep it? Many readers recommended that he give the money to charity.

Well apparently he was thinking the same thing. Yesterday, GeoHot posted on his blog that as promised, he gave the leftover donation money to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. He even posted this screenshot of the PayPal transaction for the $10,000.00 contribution.

He notes that he is donating the left over donations (plus a little extra from his own pockets) to the EFF in hopes that one day America can be a shining sample of freedom. When asked if he would continue to work on Sony products he replied, “Nah, as much as I don’t respect the goons at Sony, I do respect the court.

What do you think? Is everyone finally satisfied with the outcome of this whole thing?

PS3 hacker’s house raided by the German police

Sony is still fighting against PS3 hackers and it looks like it won’t stop that. They’ve already sued Geohot & fail0verflow team for jailbreaking PlayStation 3. Now they have the German police on their side. PS3 hacker graf_chokolo’s house was raided by the German police.

As PS3 hacker George Hotz says on his new blog:

As many of you already know, 2 days ago his house was raided by the German police. Talk about a guy who clearly had no involvement at all with piracy, cheating, or the things Sony claims to care about. Do you want to know what he has that enrages the suits at Sony so much? Talent.

So, he had no involvement at all.. PS3 hackers are still fighting Sony and oh! Geohot has Microsoft on his side. Let’s see what’ll happen!

Geohot Woes, “We built your PS3. We built this world”

Geohot is sending stern message to Sony that without hackers like him and graf_chokolo, the world would never have survived and even added – “We built your PS3. We built this world”. George Hotz was compelled to say so, after the German police raided graf_chokolo’s home and seized all his computers. He was then sued by Sony for one million euros.

As many of you already know, 2 days ago his house was raided by the German police. Talk about a guy who clearly had no involvement at all with piracy, cheating, or the things Sony claims to care about. Do you want to know what he has that enrages the suits at Sony so much? Talent.

Some people call me immature, and you know what, they are probably right. Some call me stubborn, and they are right too. But this pales grossly in comparison to Sony, who is so butthurt over the PS3 being hacked they they are blinded by rage and incompetence.

A question, how many people do you think knew or cared on January 10 about all this? Maybe a couple hundred thousand? Under a percent of your market share. And these are geeks, who frankly aren’t going to change their content purchasing habits based on the news. These are the kind of people who really are hacking their PS3 just for the sake of doing it, just cause it’s cool. The kind of people who are telling you the truth when they say they really did just hack their PS3 to runLinux. Or they are diehard pirates who never would have bought the games anyway, you know the type.

Now fast forward to February 25. Consistently, the top Sony related news articleis about the PS3 being hacked. And the causal gamer comes along and sees, oh cool, the PS3 has been hacked, now I don’t have to buy games. With a few googlesearches, they come across stuff that I or graf_chokolo had nothing at all to do with. They install it and hit the torrent sites. Hell, I was on a political news show last night, you think those people ever would have heard about this?

Just imagine what the third party devs are thinking. The PS3 is hacked forever and Sony can’t do anything but fire away at scapegoats. Great confidence boost.

This grand show against people who aren’t even pirates has to be one of the worst corporate moves in recent history, perhaps even as dumb as the rootkit fiasco. Your competition fixes the problem technically and moves on. They want it to stay quiet. And as far as sending a message to “evil” hackers goes, it really isn’t working. Just read the writings of graf_chokolo.

And I quote “SONY wants about 750.000 euros from me if i don’t cooperate They don’t know me at all I don’t care about it and they might double it The higher is the sum the higher gets my motivation They don’t understand what makes me tick. Money and even my life doesn’t mean to me very much without knowledge. I have a scientific mind and the knowledge is food to my brain.”

They’ll never understand people like us. They are scared, as they rightfully should be. We built your PS3. We built this world. We are not mindless consumers. It is us with the brains and curiosity, not you with the guns, jails, suits, titles, and dollars. And the truth is, if all of you disappeared tomorrow, the world would continue on fine. Good luck surviving without people like graf_chokolo.

Geohot Doesn’t have Exploit to Unlock iPhone 4 on Baseband 02.10.04 or 03.10.01

Infamous hacker Geohot does not have exploit to unlock iPhone 4 on baseband 02.10.04 or03.10.01. George hotz confirmed on his blog to all his fans that Apple has closed the BB holes and he is using his iPhone 3GS instead.

I wish I had an iPhone unlock, the simple BB holes appear closed (my fuzzer comes up blank). In fact, I’m still using my 3GS cause I don’t have one :-/Via Geohot Blog

The statement from Geohot marks the end of long standing rumor about new iPhone unlock tool Rubysn0w. Geohot is already busy in fighting legally with Sony, so he may not get time to work on iPhone 4 unlock. But that isn’t stopping him from venturing deeper into Sony’s product line. He has recently voiced his intention to be the first person to root the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Don’t get disheartened! iPhone Dev Team has already confirmed that they will release theupdated ultrasn0w tool once apple drops beta tag from iOS 4.3 firmware. We are sure, iPhone Dev Team will not eat their words. So, please be patient!

Geohot Sony defense fund closes after rapid response

Hacker George Hotz (aka Geohot) surprised a few people when he changed his long-standing unofficial policy on asking for donations last week; then again, when Sony unleashes its legal team on you, you need all the help you can get. It seems that help was fast forthcoming: Geohot has announced that he has all the donations he needs to secure “a few more lawyers” to defend his case over PS3 encryption cracking.

Sony’s ire is that, having closed up the routes that allowed unofficial software and platforms to be loaded onto the PS3, hackers like Hotz then came along and offered a jailbreak so that owners of the console could continue to do so. The company’s argument is that such a jailbreak enables pirated games; Geohot’s response is that there are also legitimate uses for the access. Sony sued on January 11 2011.

Geohot to Jailbreak, Root Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play Android Phone

Every device is hackable, when it is in the hands of demigod – Geohot! George Hotz has made it clear to Sony that he isn’t afraid of any legal action and want to be the first to jailbreak or root android 2.3 OS based Sony Xperia PlayStation Phone.

This would be for the first time the hacker has shown interest towards rooting Android OS based devices. Earlier he hinted his inclination towards hacking WP7. Jailbreaking or Rooting phones is legal in the US and thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

Geohot confirmed it via his blog, while asking for donation to fight against Sony.

Why should I trust you? I just saw you trying to rap battle Sony
My attempts at humor aside, I do take this whole matter very seriously. Again, it’s not about me, I was on the verge of quitting this stuff last June, and I would hate to be the one who sets a reputation for hackers that all a company has to do is sue us and we back down. In fact, I want the opposite reputation set, that the more a company tries to abuse the legal system, the harder we rally back. I will be the first person in line on the launch date of the Xperia Play, and itching to get my hands on the Next GEOHOT Project.

It seems that Geohot has been hammering away at getting the Sony Xperia Play Station phone its own taste of freedom right on its launch day. We will update you as and when more information on Xperia jailbreaking comes-in.

Geohot Starts new Blog, Asks for “Donation” to Fight Against Sony

When you get into legal trouble, you need money and so is with George Hotz. Renowned PS3 hacker Geohot is asking his fans to donate (Legal Fund) to continue legal fight against arrogant Sony. He has even started a new blog, which will update you about the current legal situation.

Media, I need your help. This is the first time I have ever asked. Please, if you support this cause, help me out and spread the word.
I want, by the time this goes to trial, to have Sony facing some of the hardest hitting lawyers in the business.
Together, we can help fix the system

Donations here are for legal defense ONLY
I checked with my lawyers before setting this up
If you have another substantial way to donate aside from money, let me know

Sony is lame, and is suing me for hacking MY OWN PS3. Help me own them in court

Sony are bullies
Sony doesn’t care if what you did was legal, if they don’t like it, they sue. Sony tried to sue a guy for getting his AIBO to do non Sony approved tricks, making it apparent that they don’t really care about piracy, they care about control. In ( Sony v Bleem), Bleem was the winner on all counts, but the high cost of a legal defense shut them down. Fortunately, that suit helped set precedent on the legality of emulators. I would hate to lose this case due to resource starvation, and with the support of the masses, I won’t. Lets turn the bully back on itself. This case has the ability to set a huge precedent for consoles and all closed systems to come. The other two should be begging Sony to back off.

Sony sued the wrong guy
I am an advocate against mass piracy, do not distribute anyone’s copyrighted work but my own, do not take crap lying down, and am even pro DRM in a sense. For example, I believe Apple has every right to lock down their iPhone in the factory as much as they want, but once it’s paid for and mine, I have the right to unlock it, smash it, jailbreak it, look at it, and hack on it. Fortunately, the courts agree with me on this point.

My PS3 goal has been to provide users a legitimate path to homebrew, which by the standards of  all previous cases (or, in reverse), is 100% legal. Sony does not even try to allege piracy or copyright infringement in this case, they allege I did things like play “super mario world, an unauthorized game” on MY PS3. And access MY PS3 in an unauthorized way. Who are they to authorize what I do with my taxed and paid for property?

fail0verflow’s goal was even nobler than mine. They wanted to give you back a feature Sony illegally stole, Linux on your PS3. It’s shameful on Sony’s part that they are being sued at all. If you have a problem with pirates, sue them, don’t sue people who point out your shortcomings.

Why should I care about your personal legal troubles?
You shouldn’t. For example, if I was taken to court for sex crimes in Sweden, I would never ask for donations. But this case isn’t about me. Clearly I am not being sued because of something I have that Sony wants, I am being sued in order to send a message that Sony is not to be messed with. But if I(and all codefendants likewise) actually win this, we have the power to send a much stronger message back. That consumers have rights, and we aren’t afraid to stand up for them.

Why did you wait until now to set this up?
I didn’t want to be trigger happy, and thought the suit might go away quickly. Also, I had to consult with my lawyers about how to do this. It’s been over a month, and it looks like this is going to be a drawn out case. I am in this for the long haul. I am very serious ethically when I take donations, for all iPhone work I only accepted after the fact, here after the fact is too late. Now I am pot committed so to say.

How much should I donate?
Put it this way, Sony has 5 lawyers, I have 2. I’d like to level the playing field, and really get some hard hitters in there. I have already racked up over 10k in legal bills; donate whatever you feel like. Leftover donations at the end of all this will be donated to the EFF.

What if I want to donate more than I feel comfortable sending through PayPal?
I’m excited! Email me, we’ll figure it out.

Why doesn’t the EFF fund this?
Ask them. They have offered to provide some legal help though, which is much appreciated.

Donate to help you, you’re the reason I can’t play Modern Warfare now…
No, I’m not. Kakaroto explains this really well here. I have never played PS3 online ever. Frankly I’m amazed by the apparent ease with which these cheats were created, security 101, why is the security in the client anyway? I had no idea this would happen, and am in full support of the cheaters being permabanned from PSN.

I’m a poor college student, what can I do to help?
I feel you, don’t worry. Spread the word. Let people know how you feel about what Sony is doing. Let Sony know how you feel about what Sony is doing.

What if SCEA tries to settle?
Lets just say, I want the settlement terms to include OtherOS on all PS3s and an apology on the PlayStation blog for ever removing it. It’d be good PR for Sony too, lord knows they could use it. I’m also willing to accept a trade, a legit path to homebrew for knowledge of how to stop new firmwares from being decrypted.

Why isn’t SCEA trying to settle?

3 honest facts to god about Geohot

iPhone and PS3 hacker George Hotz published three facts on his site for people who don’t know him and new to the site. He says that he’s never pirated a PS3 game and he don’t have PSN account. Besides he’s never hacked anything that he didn’t own.

To people new to this site, three honest to god facts about me:

* I have never pirated a PS3 game in my life, nor helped or encouraged people to do so
* I have never played PlayStation online, never mind cheated, nor helped or encouraged people to do so
* I have never hacked anything that I did not own or without consent of the owner

The purpose of the suit is to harass and discourage rather than win. The law can be used very easily to harass, and enough harassment on somebody who is simply on the thin edge anyway, well knowing that he is not authorized, will generally be sufficient to cause professional decease. If possible, of course, ruin him utterly.
— L. Ron Hubbard (Scientology cult founder), 1955

Couple of days back, Geohot rapped Light it up Contest against Sony. Well, we know a lot about you Hotz!

Geohot Raps Video Song for “Light It Up Contest”

The dust hasn’t even settled at the Geohot vs. Sony case, George Hotz has composed a video rap song for ”The Light It Up Contest” about getting sued by Sony for Playstation 3 / PS3 jailbreak.  Hit the Geohot’s lyrics and watch his video after the break!

The Light It Up Contest hosted by Street Light and is Produced by Heretic East. The 2 best entries will receive a $50 gift certificate each from Karmaloop Codes, a free beat lease from Heretic East, and a collaboration track with Street Light.

Yo it’s geohot
And for those that don’t know
I’m getting sued by Sony

Let’s take this out of the courtroom and into the streets
I’m a beast, at the least, you’ll face me in the northeast
Get my ire up, light my fire
I’ll go harder then Eminem went at Mariah
Call me a liar
Pound me in the ass with no lube, chafing
You’re fucking with the dude who got the keys to your safe and
Those that can’t do bring suits
Cry to your Uncle Sam to settle disputes
Thought you’d tackle this with a little more tact
But then again fudgepackers, I don’t know Jack

I shed a tear everytime I think of Lik Sang
But shit man, they’re a corporation
And I’m a personification of freedom for all
You fill dockets, like thats a concept foreign to y’all
While lawyers muddy water and TROs stall
Out of business is jail for me
And you’re suing me civilly

Exhibit this in the courtroom
Go on, do it, I dare you
