HBO Go now available for iOS, brings over 1,400 shows with it

HBO has finally released their much-awaited HBO Go iOS app for iPhone and iPad devices. The app gives HBO subscribers free access to over 1,400 shows in addition to many sports event and full-length films. What’s great is that the app offers up all of HBO’s quality programming — True Blood, The Sopranos, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Boardwalk Empire, and more — and the app streams over 3G in addition to Wi-Fi. It’s available now in the App Store if you want to get your Nucky Thompson on.

iPad 2 hits Japan, Hong Kong, Korea & more this week; China on May 6

It’s not just the white iPhone 4 going on sale this week; the iPad 2 is also making its debut in a further twelve countries, including Japan, Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore. Both the WiFi-only and the WiFi + 3G models will be offered in almost all the new locations; China will also get the iPad 2 on May 6, though only in WiFi-only format.

The iPad 2 WiFi will be available in Japan on April 28 and Hong Kong, India, Israel, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey and UAE on April 29 for a suggested retail price of $499 (US) for the 16GB model, $599 (US) for the 32GB model and $699 (US) for the 64GB model. As for the iPad 2 WiFi + 3G, that will be priced at $629 (US) for the 16GB model, $729 (US) for the 32GB model and $829 (US) for the 64GB model.

Finally, the iPad 2 with WiFi will be available in China on May 6. Apple is promising further international availability to be announced at a later date.

SG Comics Presents: Apple vs. Samsung

Apple’s patent suit claims Samsung copied the “look and feel” of their user interface, including having a grid of colorful square icons with uniformly rounded corners, a bottom row “Springboard” of square icons, and an overall rectangular product shape that has four uniformly rounded corners. The TouchWiz UI resemblance to Apple’s iOS UI is certainly there, but it will still be one tough legal battle with Samsung fighting back that will bring plenty of analysis on its implications for Apple and the smartphone/tablet industry as a whole. But, let’s just imagine for fun if Samsung were to lose on the UI design battlefront…

The Apple vs. Samsung legal battle is an interesting one despite the myriad of lawsuits already in full swing amongst all the major manufacturers. Apple is Samsung’s number two largest client and fills up 4% of their annual revenue, whereas Samsung is also Apple’s major components supplier in semi-conductors, memory, and displays.

Dell Latitude ST and Streak Pro tablets detailed; CEO predicts Android will squash iPad

Details of two 10-inch Dell tablets, one based on Intel’s Oak Trail and the other on NVIDIA’s incoming Tegra T25, have emerged. According to the tablet roadmap, acquired by Android Central, the Dell Latitude ST is expected to arrive in October running Windows 7 on a 1.5GHz Oak Trail chip, while the Dell Streak Pro will run Android 3.0 Honeycomb on the Tegra T25 and land in June. The leak comes amid Dell CEO Michael Dell admitting that he “didn’t completely” predict the “rapid rise of the tablet” and predicted that Android would squash Apple’s iPad.

Asked whether he thought Android tablets would end up outpacing Apple’s iPad – something analysts don’t expect to take place for several years – Dell was confident the Google platform would eventually dominate the market. “Not tomorrow. Not the next day.” he said, “But again, if you look at 18 months ago, Android phones were like, “What is that? And now there are more Android phones than iPhones. I don’t see any reason why the same won’t occur with Android tablets.”

The Dell Latitude ST has a 1366 x 768 display, 2GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. There are dual cameras – 3-megapixels and 1.3-megapixels – along with GPS, an accelerometer, 1080p output and an 8hr battery. Dell is also toting the “active pen support” which sounds a lot like the active digitizer on the ASUS Eee Slate EP121, only paired with longer battery life thanks to the power-sipping Intel CPU.

As for the Dell Streak Pro – previously codenamed Gallo and tipped for a Q2 release – it will have a 1280 x 800 display, a modular – presumably GSM or CDMA – data-only modem, twin cameras and microphones, and an “Enterprise application stack” along with Dell’s Stage 1.5 UI. The latter is presumably the sync-enabled update Dell recently told us was incoming. According to the document’s source, Dell is also considering both USB Host and USB Client support, along with an ethernet-equipped dock, both of which would be useful for the enterprise market.

Apple’s Q2 Sales Results Show 18.65 million iPhones, 4.69 Million iPads, Apparent Growth

It appears that Apple’s sales call has shown the company to – surprise – be growing wildly, while the numbers on iPad sales specifically seem to be ever so slightly slipping. The sales call included the computer giant’s fiscal 2011 quarter ending on March 26th, 2011. During this quarter they’ve posted record second quarter revenue of $24.67 billion as well as record second quarter net profit of $5.00 billion, this translating to $6.40 per diluted share. And of course, it should be clear why sales for the original iPad “slipped” this past quarter: everyone knew, or at least suspected, that the iPad 2 was coming. Why purchase a tablet when you know a much better tablet is coming down the sled hill? Therefor watch, if you will, these numbers blast into outer space on next quarter’s call.

Oh Apple, you wily bunch, when will you ever stop growing?

Never, never ever, that’s what Steve Jobs essentially said on this call, “With quarterly revenue growth of 83 percent and profit growth of 95 percent, we’re firing on all cylinders. … We will continue to innovate on all fronts throughout the remainder of the year.” Unless the end of the year comes, that is. In reality, compared to the numbers last year with revenue at $13.50 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, I and we are thinking their growth shows more than a little growth possibility.

Have a peek at the statistics below, and I’ll leave most of the conjecture up to Ben, but I’ve gotta say: no matter how you look at it, Apple continues to sell a whole barrel full of iProducts and will continue to do so until the end of time. They show no signs of letting up any time soon, and what we can all take away from this sales call is that the whole crew is definitely still on all four wheels.

Apple Reports Second Quarter Results

Record March Quarter Drives 83 Percent Revenue Growth, 95 Percent Profit Growth

Record iPhone Sales Grow 113 Percent

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 second quarter ended March 26, 2011. The Company posted record second quarter revenue of $24.67 billion and record second quarter net profit of $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $13.50 billion and net quarterly profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 41.4 percent compared to 41.7 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 59 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple sold 3.76 million Macs during the quarter, a 28 percent unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 18.65 million iPhones in the quarter, representing 113 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter. Apple sold 9.02 million iPods during the quarter, representing a 17 percent unit decline from the year-ago quarter. The Company also sold 4.69 million iPads during the quarter.

iOS ecosystem still overshadows Android tips research; iPad will dominate slates

Android‘s dominance in smartphone popularity may be squeezing Apple, but that pattern of user preference hasn’t spread to tablets yet – and may not for some time. They’re the opinions of several new reports out this week, with comScore discovering that, unlike when solely phones are considered, Apple’s entire iOS range beats out Android in popularity by 59-percent.

That difference, particularly when it comes to tablets, looks unlikely to change other experts reckon. Goldman Sachs released a 68-page report on the state of the tablet ecosystem, Business Insider reports, concluding that Apple is likely to dominate proceedings for at least the next two years.

In fact, Goldman predicts that Apple could well hold 71-percent of the tablet market in 2012, despite the growing number of Android 3.0 Honeycomb models. It’s a shift that will see Microsoft and Intel particularly undermined, they claim, as ARM-based models continue to oust x86 tablets running Windows.

A5 beats Tegra 2 in benchmark tests, thanks to larger size

GLBenchmark pitted a few tablet processors against each other in a speed showdown, and Apple’s custom-designed A5 chip in the iPad 2 handily beats NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor, used in competing tablets like the Motorola Xoom. A few analysts are saying that it’s the size that matters in this case — Apple’s chip is more than twice the size of the Tegra 2, and that allows Apple to pull off some better benchmarks, even though the two chips are relatively the same in terms of specifications. Usually, of course, a bigger chip would mess with the design of the overall hardware, but since Apple is doing everything itself, it can afford the extra space and the larger components.

Of course, NVIDIA is set to introduce a Tegra 3 chip later on this year, and that will undoubtedly introduce a new wrinkle to the tablet lineup. Apple no doubt also has its engineers working on faster chips, which means the speed of tablet computing likely still has a long way to progress.

Apple releases iOS 4.3.2 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch; iOS 4.2.7 for Verizon iPhone

In line with BGR’s exclusive report earlier this week, Apple on Thursday released iOS version 4.3.2 for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The only changes noted by Apple are bug fixes and security updates. Apple does specifically note that the update fixes a crash related to FaceTime, as we reported, and it also fixes some iPad 3G + Wi-Fi connectivity issues. Also of note, iOS 4.2.7 — also a minor update with bug fixes and security updates — is now available for Verizon Wireless’ iPhone 4. Both updates are available immediately via iTunes.

Tweetbot Twitter client for iOS now available

Tapbot just lifted the veil on Tweetbot, the firm’s newest iOS  Twitterclient. We’ve been using the client for a bit now and it’s definitely pretty versatile; it supports multiple accounts, as well as multiple timelines. So when we wanted to quickly pull up a specific list, we just had to tap the “Timeline” title at the top to quickly switch. The app offers “smart gestures,” too, which means you can triple tap a tweet to reply or swipe a tweet from left to right to view messages you’ve exchanged with that person. As with most Twitter applications, you can post your location, share photos, videos, manage lists, and more. Tweetbot also includes push notifications with support for Boxcar. We like the fast user interface, but wish that it supported active links within the timeline. The app currently forces you to click a tweet and then launch an embedded link. Otherwise we’re pretty pleased with Tweetbot so far. It’s available for $2.99 in the iTunes App Store and is supported on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Hit the jump for a link.

RBC: ‘iPads outselling hotcakes,’ iPhone 5 due in September

RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky on Tuesday reiterated the firm’s position that sales of popular Apple products like the iPad 2 likely helped Apple record an impressive fiscal second quarter. In a note to investors, Abramsky wrote that tremendous demand for Apple’s iPad 2 tablet along with solid sales of the iPhone 4 (17 million units) and Apple’s refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks (3.6 million total Macs) may have led to $24 billion in revenue in the second quarter. The figure would represent 78% growth over the same quarter last year, and is above Wall Street’s consensus of $23 billion. RBC sees Apple having shipped 7 million iPads in the second quarter, which includes 2-3 million iPad 2 units and is down 5% from the year prior. The firm estimates 8 million third-quarter iPad shipments, and also notes that Apple will likely launch the iPhone 5 in September — but if it instead launches in June, it could add $1.2 billion to the firm’s $23-$24 billion third-quarter revenue estimates. RBC adjusted its full-year iPad sales forecast up from 25 million to 31 million units, thus pushing its fiscal 2011 revenue estimates from $99 billion to $102 billion and possibly helping Apple to cross the $100 billion milestone for the first time. Apple will report its fiscal second-quarter earnings on April 20th.
