Did Apple ditch Facebook integration to pursue MobileMe with FourSquare?

I am going to swing the cat a bit on this one. The other day we posted up a video of a white iPhone 4 that had surfaced that showed some interesting ties into Facebook that never came to iOS 4. We wondered at the time if perhaps what we were seeing was a glimpse at iOS 5. At the same time, what we many have been looking at in that video was Facebook integration that Apple had planned and then backed away from.

This is where the swinging starts. We know from Electronista that the co-founder of FourSquare, Dennis Crowley, was on the Apple campus in Cupertino yesterday for a meeting. Apparently, along with Crowley was the business developments and partnerships head Holger Luedof along with public relations manager Erin Gleason. The trio was in the area for the Where 2.0 conference. What we don’t know is what they folks were there for. However, the visit raises some interesting prospects with rumors of a new Apple cloud service running rampant and a change for MobileMe nearing.

This meeting could have been nothing more than a friendly visit to talk to pals, though why Crowley would need his corporate strongmen (and women) to visit pals is questionable. However, it could have been a meeting that would see FourSquare providing local search services for MobileMe on Apple devices. If that is an accurate assumption, it could well explain why the Facebook integration on the leaked video mentioned before never came to be. Apple wouldn’t need Facebook Places for instance if it had FourSquare in the MobileMe fold.

Unlock iPhone 3GS on iOS 4.3 with Ultrasn0w Fixer [Video]

iH8sn0w, the well-know iPhone hacker has managed to port new tool called ultrasn0w fixer on iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.3, the new tool has been developed by msft_guy (TinyUmbrella developer), he successfully developed ultrasn0w fixer in beta stages of iOS 4.3.

What will ultrasn0w fixer do?

In the meantime, ultrasn0w fixer will unlock iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.3 which has previously unlock via iPad baseband 6.15.00, also iH8sn0w will release a new version of his sn0wbreeze jailbreak to include this ultasn0w fixer on it.

Will ultrasn0w fixer work on iPhone 4 ?

According to iH8sn0w you will be able to unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3 by preserving the unlockable baseband 1.59.00 with the ultrasn0w fixer soon.

Note: iH8sn0w is not working on 2.10.04 / 3.10.01 / 4.10.01 basebands on iPhone 4.

ETA for the new Ultrasn0w ?

iH8sn0w has just confirmed via his twitter that he will release it for iPhone 3GS tomorrow, but he didn’t give an exact date for iPhoe 4

Kinect Hacked to Work with iPhone & iPad [Videos]

The hacking and jailbreaking community has always fascinated me. This time some cyberpunks at Supertouch devised a Kinect-hackery that turned it into a cynosure. Instead of Windows Phone 7, they used iPhone and iPad to control hurling digital balls while playing “Dodgeball” on Microsoft Kinect. Check out the video after the break!

However, the graphics are not clean as Microsoft’s cross-platform gaming solution but for the extreme dedication or the fervor they have shown for the platform, you have to give them quite a bit of credit. Isn’t?

iPad 3 with Retina Display and bigger iPod touch in the Offing – Report

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is working on a new device that may be either a smaller iPad or larger iPod touch and that iPad 3 will arrive with a Retina Display.

According to Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities, iPad 3 would be sporting a 9.7 inch IPS panel with FFS (fringe-field switching) technology, which enables a wider viewing angle and clearer visual quality under sunlight and will support Retina Display with a resolution of 2048×1536. iPad 3 is said to be released soon after iPad 2 is launched.

Kuo said, a new iOS device with a screen size between that of the current iPad and the iPhone is under evaluation and can be release during the second half of 2011. However, he is “not sure” whether it would be “a ‘Super iPhone’ or an ‘iPad mini.’”

Half-sized Android and Blackberry Tablets have already been criticized in past by Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, as it doesn’t deliver a real tablet experience. Most likely, Apple will not deliver a small iPad with a 5 to 7 inch screen size. However, Apple may be interested in delivering an oversized iPod touch intended to fill the gap between its 3.5 inch smartphone sized iOS devices and its full sized 9.7 inch iPad.

With a 5 inch screen, a “big iPod touch” at its existing resolution would offer a 230ppi screen density; stretched across a 7 inch screen the same resolution would deliver 164ppi, still higher than the existing iPad’s pixel density of 132ppi. Rather than trying to crush the full sized iPad’s resolution into a smaller screen, something Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs quipped last fall would require filing down users’ fingers, such a device could simply serve as an expansion of the iPod family, offering a larger view of the simpler iPod touch user interface.

iPhone Nano to Arrive with Edge-to-Edge Screen, Voice Navigation?

WSJ is reporting that purported smaller iPhone (codename N97) is lighter in weight and have an edge-to-edge screen with touch interface, as well as a virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation.

The person who saw the prototype of the new iPhone said the device was significantly lighter than the iPhone 4 and had an edge-to-edge screen that could be manipulated by touch, as well as a virtual keyboard and voice-based navigation. The person said Apple, based in Cupertino, Calif., also plans to upgrade the iPhone 4.

iPhone 4 on Verizon Jailbroken with Greenpois0n, Pwned for Life ?

This is BIG! It seems that Verizon iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.6 has been jailbroken using Greenpois0n RC5. Multiple iPhone 4 users on Verizon have confirmed via tweet that the Greenpois0n RC5 untethered jailbreak tool worked flawlessly on CDMA iPhone 4.

Hard to verify (seems legit) : @lovetenderhh claims he has a verizon i4 and greenpois0n RC5 works ! Thank you for the test and sharing ! Via

@pod2g geenpois0n works with i4 verizon great Via

While we are not sure about how authentic the information is but few weeks back, Musclenerd confirmed that the Verizon iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.6 can be jailbroken on its launch day with limera1n. And those who buy early, the CDMA iPhone 4 unit will be pwned for Life! Interestingly, Greenpois0n uses the same USB exploit as used in limera1n tool. But we were not sure that the CDMA iPhone 4 gets its own taste of freedom so soon. We need to have more tidbits from the hacking community to trickle in.
