Student Makes $50,000 A Year Jailbreaking iPhones

Kevin Lee, a senior at George Mason University, Virginia, has turned iPhone jailbreaking into a full-time job, hacking customers devices to earn an impressive $50,000 a year. Lee uses Craigslist to advertise his services, which include unlocking, jailbreaking, and customizing devices to a user’s preference.

Lee told The Washington Post that he started off with a mere 5 to 10 customers a week – most of whom were friends. Now he pulls in between 30 and 40 – performing relatively simple hacks that many people don’t like to attempt themselves. A recent customer from the Mongolian embassy wanted his device unlocked so that he could use it in Mongolia when he moves.

Lee’s interview with The Washington Post is rather short, and he has since declined to provide further comment, removing his advert and contact details from Craigslist.

Though jailbreaking was ruled legal last year by the Library of Congress, many still fear repercussions from Apple. I’m sure the Dev-Team behind PwnageTool, RedSn0w and other jailbreak & unlock tools won’t be too happy either – in the past they have publicly shown their displeasure to others who try to make money from the tools that they provide for free.

Lee isn’t the only person to make money from this service, however. Kyle Matthews from ModMyI said in the report:

The industry just keeps increasing; there are even repair stores that will jailbreak for you.

The article is well worth a read and provides some interesting information on the jailbreaking community and the state of the industry at the moment.

Yo it’s geohot
And for those that don’t know
I’m getting sued by Sony

Let’s take this out of the courtroom and into the streets
I’m a beast, at the least, you’ll face me in the northeast
Get my ire up, light my fire
I’ll go harder then Eminem went at Mariah
Call me a liar
Pound me in the ass with no lube, chafing
You’re fucking with the dude who got the keys to your safe and
Those that can’t do bring suits
Cry to your Uncle Sam to settle disputes
Thought you’d tackle this with a little more tact
But then again fudgepackers, I don’t know Jack

I shed a tear everytime I think of Lik Sang
But shit man, they’re a corporation
And I’m a personification of freedom for all
You fill dockets, like thats a concept foreign to y’all
While lawyers muddy water and TROs stall
Out of business is jail for me
And you’re suing me civilly

Exhibit this in the courtroom
Go on, do it, I dare you

Apple to sell smaller iPhone for $200 off contract to combat Android

Bloomberg is reporting that Apple is working on a new design for the iPhone for a less expensive, contract-free model to compete Google’s Android platform and bypass wireless carrier contracts.

The new iPhone will use a processor, display and other smaller components similar to those of iPhone 4. The report also claims that Apple also has a Dual Mode iPhone in the pike for a summer release.

What’s also interesting in this report, Apple is working on a Universal SIM which would allow users to jump from network to network. The small iPhone would cost only $200 off-contract unlike the iPhone 4 which costs $600 off-contact. Significant drop in price, isn’t it?

Ben Heck creates a smaller portable Sega CDX system

Ben Heck has created another interesting and sufficiently geeky gadget on his show recently. The new creation is an old school portable gaming console made from an old Sega CDX system. I don’t even recall the Sega CDX system being on the market.

Heck Said, “It was a blast taking something as awesome as the Sega CDX and making it even easier to use with a smaller footprint so I can bring it with me everywhere,” said Ben Heck. “Not only that, but I reminisced about Full Motion Video games from the early ’90′s and a few diamonds in the rough like ‘Snatcher’ and ‘Lunar: The Silver Star.’”

I may not recall the CDX system myself, but I can appreciate the cool design that Heck came up with. The episode of the show where he created the device walked through the construction and layout process. If you really like the device, you can hit the Element 14 website and register to win the device yourself.

ROM Manager (ClockworkMod) Recovery Host Down, Back Up, In Need of Assistance

If you’re the kind of person who likes to break your Android device down to build it back up in your own image, you know about ClockworkMod and ROM Manager. The fellows involved in this project have done massive workings on the insides of all manner of Android devices and they’ll be recorded in the history books of programming as some of the essential unofficial teammates of Google’s Android mobile OS. That said, as they are working for the greater good of all developers and hackers of mobile OS, we aught to offer them our help when something blows up in their face. Something has.

It’s not the biggest breaking of items in the world, and in fact very little, if anything has been lost, but it appears that ROM Manager’s recovery host was both clubbed down and put back up today. In the transition from this recovery host to a redundant backup, a few little items were lost. If you know of these items (these files, these code sets,) and have them yourself, have a chat with the official folks (@koush@clockworkmod) and let them know you can help.

Galaxy S 4G Revealed by T-Mobile on Honeycomb Day

The Galaxy S line of phones from Samsung has just expanded with the Galaxy S 4G. This fabulous new phone will be rocking the house with 4G speeds, a full copy of the movie INCEPTION, and a bunch more surprises including full T-Mobile TV functionality. A 720p video camera on the back, Android 2.2 Froyo installed inside, and a pre-installed 16GB microSD memory card make this phone a slight step behind the rest of the pack as far as being the absolute top notch, but certainly it is heading for the top of the middle heap.

Also take special note of the fact that this phone’s stocked with Inception. Certainly an odd play by Samsung, but possibly leading again to the idea that more media (movies and music) will be finding their way onto phones in the future — will today mark the day when all Androids become iPods? We’ll see. Take a peek at the full press release below and stay tuned for additional details!
