How to : Extract iPod nano 6G Firmware

I’m posting here a tutorial on how to extract the 1.0 Firmware from your iPod Nano 6G which has recently been hacked by James Whelton. Here is the tutorial :
1. Download the current 1.0 Firmware from this link :
http://appldnld.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bundles/061-9054.20100907.VKPt5/iPod_1.0_36A00403.ipsw
2. Next you need to rename the file iPod_1.0_36A00403.ipsw to iPod_1.0_36A00403.zip

3.To unzip this file you will need a utility called Extract2g from here. cd to the same folder as files and build it using the make command in Terminal.

4.Now in that unzipped  Pod_1.0_36A00403 folder you will need to have a certain file called Firmware.MSE, drag that into the same folder as your built Extract2g file.

5.Now open the terminal, and while in the same folder, go: ./extract2g  -A Firmware.MSE

6.This will now dump the firmware files as shown in the screenshot above.

Hope This Helped. 🙂 Have fun guys and Stay Tuned !!

  1. It was about time the voice of reason make an entrance. The sad fact, though, is that such moments are rare and for the most part remain buried under a clutter of nonsense.

  2. I purchased the latest ipod nano 6g at: http://thelatestipod.com
it also features ipod shuffle 4g, ipod touch 4, and most of all, the ipod nano 6g
    🙂

  3. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 and when i run the ./extract2g -A Firmware.MSE it says “permission denied” what do i do to get to the firmware insides since this isn’t working ?

  4. Does this work with windows?

  5. Windows??

  6. Wow! Everything I desired summarised in a very brief way. In my view, it’s the most excellent article I have ever viewed. Good job!
